America has issued a stern warning to those guilty of violence against protesters in Iran
US Holds Iranian Officials, Vice Police Responsible for Violence
Death toll from violent clashes between Iranian forces rises to 41
Washington, US President Joe Biden has expressed deep concern over the crackdown on peaceful protesters in Iran, saying the perpetrators of the violence will have to face its consequences. Significantly, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested by vice police for not wearing a hijab and following her death protests erupted across the country. Iranian security forces cracked down on protesters.
In a stern message to Iran, Biden said the Iranian government has denied basic freedoms to its people for decades and suppressed the aspirations of future generations through threat, force and violence. America stands with Iranian women and all Iranian citizens who inspire the world with their bravery.
He said the United States was making it easier for Iranian citizens to access the Internet. The United States also holds Iranian officials and organizations such as the Morality Police responsible for inciting violence to suppress civil society. According to the US president, America will this week impose sanctions on perpetrators of violence against peaceful protesters. The United States has made it clear that it will continue to hold Iranian officials to account and support the rights of the Iranian people to protest freely.
Biden further said he was deeply concerned about reports of an escalating violent crackdown against peaceful protesters, including students and women, in Iran demanding their rights and basic human dignity.
Iranian state television said the death toll in violent clashes between protesters and Iranian security forces had reached 41. Human rights groups claimed a higher number of people killed. Local authorities say they have arrested at least 1,500 people.
