James Beard Foundation Releases List of Top Female-Led Restaurants in San Francisco

OpenTable has partnered with the James Beard Foundation to spotlight 21 restaurants in San Francisco led by incredible chefs and restaurateurs, who also happen to be women.

Let’s be honest: it’s hard to be a woman in almost every industry. And as last year’s headlines proved, the restaurant industry is no exception. Harassment is far too common in the kitchen and The Chronicle’s reporting strives to expose abuse where it exists.

The Chronicle’s new food critic, Soleil Ho, also said she would not review restaurants run by men credibly accused of assault or harassment. Instead, she eats at places like Nyum Bai in Oakland, where chef and owner Nite Yun is popularizing Cambodian cuisine in the Bay Area.

Speaking of Oakland, the city’s diverse array of female-run restaurants earned it a spot on Food & Wine’s 29 Places to Go (and Eat) list of 2019.

Of course, there are many other interesting options. Let us know which ones you would include in the list in the comments.

Editor’s note: The James Beard Foundation’s list of female-run restaurants originally included Bar Crudo, where Melissa Perfit previously served as head chef. Perfit has since moved on to Ayala, and the roster has been changed to remove Bar Crudo.
